I was a rookie reporter 30 years ago when a Nebraska Press Women member invited me to join. NPW has given me opportunities for continued education, networking, friendship, leadership development, and travel in Nebraska and across the country.”

Benefits of Membership

NPW works to improve the communications profession through conventions, workshops, a communications contest, newsletters, scholarships and achievement awards. NPW also provides a forum for discussion of mutual issues and concerns as well as an opportunity for mentoring and motivating one another.

Conventions: NPW offers two state conventions annually (spring and fall) at various locations around the state. Each convention features workshops, speakers and panel discussions designed to enhance members’ knowledge and skills. Conventions also give members a chance to talk over problems and share ideas.

Member contest and awards: NPW’s annual communications contest offers professional recognition and learning opportunities for members. Winners are recognized at spring conventions and sweepstakes awards are presented to the top three overall winners. First-place winners in each category go on to the national competition.

NPW also acknowledges outstanding personal and professional accomplishments through its annual Communicator of Achievement award. The COA winner is announced at fall conventions and the winner goes on to represent Nebraska at the national convention the following year.

Student scholarships and contest: NPW supports two scholarships that are awarded annually to college undergraduates and graduate students who are pursuing careers in communications at Nebraska colleges. NPW also sponsors a high school journalism contest to create interest in the profession and to promote excellence in high school journalism endeavors. As in the professional contest, first-place winners in each category go on to national competition.

Newsletters: NPW’s quarterly newsletters detail the organization’s activities, news of members and other information of professional concern. The newsletter is supplemented by periodic mailings or e-mails that keep members posted on professional development opportunities and other special activities.
