Nine Nebraska high school students were among those honored Sept. 7 with awards in the 2018 National Federation of Press Women High School Communications Contest.

The awards were presented at the NFPW Communications Conference in Bethlehem, Pa. The Nebraska students qualified to enter the contest by placing first in the Nebraska Press Women High School Communications Contest last spring.

The annual contest includes categories for student newspaper, yearbook, broadcasting and online video work.

Nebraska students placing in the national contest were:

  • Opinion — Madeline Robertson, Marian High School, Omaha, first place.
  • Sports story — Nathanial George, Creighton Preparatory High School, Omaha, second place.
  • Environment — Delaney Stekr, Marian High School, Omaha, second place.
  • Video feature story — Trenton Hancock, Westside High School, Omaha, second place.
  • Columns or blogs — Shannon McSweeney, Marian High School, Omaha, third place.
  • Sports photo — Audrey Yost, Marian High School, Omaha, third place.
  • Best Newscast: Radio or Television — Tristan Roemmich, Creighton Preparatory High School, Omaha, third place.
  • Video spots story — Christepher Speeks and DeAndre Hill, Westside High School, Omaha, honorable mention.
