Nine Nebraska students are among award winners throughout the United States who are being honored for their outstanding communications efforts.
Nearly 2,000 students participated in this year’s High School Communications Contest sponsored by the National Federation of Press Women Education Fund. First-place entries in state contests, including one held by Nebraska Press Women, advanced to the national round of competition.
Nationally, Nebraska students earned one first-place award, one second-place award, four third-place awards and three honorable mentions.
Maggie Mantini of Marian High School in Omaha earned a first-place award in the opinion category for her article “Memory Care Facilities: for patients or for profit?” The judge said it was a “very empathetic and sensitive piece,” adding, “I admire your willingness to share feelings to get your point across.”
Other Nebraska award winners are:
- Environment – second place, Malia Battafarano of Westside High School, Omaha.
- Radio Prepared Report – third place, Will Eikenbary of Westside High School, Omaha.
- Television Interview or Talk Show – third place, Meg Gross and Grace Taylor of Bellevue West High School, Bellevue.
- Video News Story – third place, Elissa Treu of Bellevue West High School, Bellevue.
- Video Sports Story – third place, Meg Gross and Keely Prusia of Bellevue West High School, Bellevue.
- Yearbook Photo – honorable mention, Ian Abbott of Dorchester High School, Dorchester.
- Cartooning – honorable mention, Sean Burton of Millard South High School, Omaha.
- Graphics and Photo Illustration – honorable mention, Julia Steiner of Westside High School, Omaha.
